Don't panic about the recent $25 million deepfake scam. But the threat of AI scams is rising. Here is how to protect yourself.

In a widely reported fraud case, scammers used deepfakes to pose as a multi-national corporation's CFO and trick a finance employee into transferring ~$25 million to their account.

I wouldn't panic about this without seeing more details about the case. Current deepfake/genAI technologies have several flaws that would make it practically impossible for the scammers to pose as the CFO on live video without being spotted.

However, the threat of deepfake scams is rising and you should know how to protect yourself. Interestingly, the basic habits of cybersecurity go a long way toward protecting you against such scams.

Reining in your instincts, using alternative communication channels, and checking the provenance of potential AI-generated material will protect you against all the kinds of deepfake scams that have been cropping up in recent months.
