We should be very skeptical of their claim. It's far from clear how the scientific ideation process proceeds, which in itself means we can't casually say that a chatbot can't help do it. What's more, many scientists appear to proceed by applying a single trick repeatedly....a trick we can easily describe. It's interesting how many Nobel prizes have been awarded for isolating a new element for the first time. For decades it was an evergreen goal.

Perhaps the authors mean that the chatbot can't do this discovery without someone asking it questions, but it can't do anything at all without being asked questions, so that would be an odd claim.
